6th November saw the first rehearsal in the Landkey Carols HLF funded project, leading up to a full day of workshops to learn some of the half-forgotten carols found in the North Devon villages of Landkey and Swimbridge. The rehearsals will take place at The Old School Centre, Tuesdays 7pm to 9pm, led by Nick Wyke (who currently runs the North Devon Folk Choir).
Elsewhere in the project Paul Wilson will be working with both Landkey and Swimbridge Schools, and also running a couple of relaxed afternoon sessions (13th and 20th November at Old School Centre 3.00pm to 4.00pm) for those who are unable to attend the singing rehearsals, to chat about the carols and the old tradition of travelling round the countryside to sing them.
The project culminates this year with a full day of workshops and performances on Saturday 1st December at Landkey School, led by Nick Wyke and Jon Dyer. Singers and players welcome to the day, Workshops 10am to 3.30pm, followed by a performance of everything learned plus other carols familiar and new at 4.00pm. the day is free and a collection will be taken to help with the continuation of the project.
The Sing Around The Bay project 2019 has been launched, with over 300 school children packed into White Rock School Hall to help devise a theme for next year’s concert. As well as doing warm ups and singing songs the children all took part in a consultation event to tell us what sort of things they like to do and are interested in so we can tailor the theme to fit.
This is a very exciting development for this project as Paul Wilson and Marilyn Tucker will be supporting and mentoring four singer songwriters to work with the schools: Emily Howard, Steve Sowden, Leah Whitcher and Jane Anderson-Brown.
2018 will be hard to beat, but we have hopes to make it even better next year, for the 20th Anniversary Folk Festival 2019. Tickets are already selling! We have an international line-up that includes the singers from Sardinia Sos Cantores (whose leader Angel Pisanu made a surprise visit this year), Dandari from Latvia and our friends from Iceland Chris Foster and Bara Grimsdottir. The full line up will be published soon, so watch out via the www.wrenmusic.co.uk
